Where our imagery comes from, and how attribution works.
Last updated: July 2026
Images help history feel vivid. We use photography and illustrations from a range of sources and aim to respect the rights of every creator and institution.
Sources of imagery
- Public-domain and openly licensed archives (for example, works whose copyright has expired or that are released under permissive licenses).
- Reputable free-image libraries, used within their licensing terms.
- Where a specific credit is available for an image, it is displayed in the image caption on the relevant timeline.
Attribution
Individual credits appear beneath images where provided. Where an image is in the public domain, no attribution is legally required, but we note provenance where we can.
Rights and takedowns
We respect copyright. If you believe an image has been used incorrectly or without proper attribution, please contact us and we will review and, if appropriate, update or remove it promptly. See the Contact page.
